Course Description

Algebra 1 prepares students for future (high school, college and beyond) mathematics classes. The Algebra 1B course has been designed to build upon the foundation laid in the Algebra 1A course and continue with a deeper study of its concepts. Algebra 1B is a combination of mandatory, accelerated review of Algebra 1A content, and higher level, rigorous content. Using direct instruction, group and independent study, homework, activities, projects and technology, students will work with Algebraic foundations that will lead into the study of equations and inequalities. This school year will also have Algebra 1A students exploring the foundations of Algebra, systems, exponential, quadratic and higher degree functions before moving on to polynomials. Algebra 1B students will also study radical and rational functions. Both student groups will be studying data analysis and probability. For more information, the complete curriculum is located on the Cologne Academy site. Course Requirements

Materials:

 

  • Three-ring Binder With Tabbed Page Dividers

There are four major units, with further sub-units in this course. Each unit is to be separated with a page divider and marked clearly (students may also opt to further separate and label sub-units; this is not required). Notes, handouts, assignments and other materials must be kept neat and organized in the binder. Binder and note checks will be administered randomly to ensure neatness and organization.

 

  • Highlighters

For the purpose of making formulas, algorithms, etc. easier to locate.

 

  • Loose-leaf paper, pencil and erasers

All work should be done on loose-leaf paper and in pencil. Mistakes (and we will make many) must be erased completely. Work completed in pen will earn a proficiency indicator of 0. Assignments must be kept neat and organized. Messy work/assignments will earn a proficiency indicator of 0. All submissions must have name, date and assignment reference listed at the top of the page. Assignments with no name/not formatted correctly will earn a proficiency indicator of 0.

 

  • 1 Ream of Centimeter Graph Paper

 Any assignments requiring manually sketched/graphed/plotted points or lines must be completed on graph paper.

 

  • Ruler or Straight Edge

All lines (coordinate axis, graphs, etc.) must be sketched neatly.

 

  • Calculator

TI-84+, TI-84+ Silver Edition, or TI-83 is required for the in depth study of graphs and to fulfill other MN State Standards and Core Knowledge Sequence requirements.

What to Bring/Do

 

  • Classroom Behavior

Come to class ready to work, learn and be successful! All students must bring all class materials daily, unless otherwise indicated by instructor, including textbook, workbook, binder, pencils & highlighters and assignments. No food or gum is permitted in class, unless otherwise indicated by instructor. Students are allowed to bring a clear container of water. All students are expected to work hard in order to earn proficiency indicators of 3 or 4, maintain integrity and honesty in their work and to always request assistance when needed. Students should be respectful to self and others at all times and follow all policies and procedures as outlined in the Cologne Academy Middle School Student Handbook.

 

  • Homework and Classwork

Assignments will be recorded on the front white board daily. Additionally, handouts for the week will be available until Friday of every week.  Students are required to keep an accurate record of all assignments and are responsible for submitting all assignments on time. Homework is typically assigned daily (depending on student progress) with suggested review activities to complete over any school break. No homework will be assigned over the weekends, holidays, or breaks. Students are required to show all work and box their final answer. Assignments not meeting this requirement will earn a proficiency indicator of 0 and will be returned for redo. Problems completed without showing all work and /or boxing the final answer will earn a proficiency indicator of 0, regardless of final solution, and will be returned for redo.   • Interims, Tests and Quizzes

Interims and in class assessments are always announced. Quizzes will not always be announced. If a student is absent the day of any assessment a make-up must be scheduled immediately upon returning to school. Students are responsible for completing all assessments. Tests and quizzes are eligible for re-do until a scholar demonstrates that he/she is meeting or exceeding the standards. Students are required to show all work and box their final answer.  To schedule a re-do, students must fulfill all requirements and complete the study log. Problems completed without showing all work and/or boxing the final answer will earn a proficiency indicator of 0 regardless of final solution and will be returned for redo.

 

  • Assignment/Assessment Return

Generally, all work will be returned (scored/feedback) daily or on Friday of each week (interim assessments will not be returned to take home). It is expected that assignments/assessments be reviewed and used as study guides. A running record of assignments will be available – students may opt to view this at any appropriate time. It is highly encouraged that students use this resource to check for any missing assignments/assessments.

 

  • Seek Additional Assistance

Further practice times will be available during lunch, diversified learning and after school by appointment only (please make sure I know you are coming). Do not allow yourself to fall behind – all concepts in Algebra build upon previous content.

 

  • Habits of Discussion

Discussion is an important element of learning any discipline. Great discussion is a skill. Students will be practicing and be required to use habits of discussion ranging from tracking the speaker to building upon a statement. Cologne Academy is dedicated to preparing our students to engage in college level conversation beginning, in our K – 8 classrooms.
