Integer Addition

Rules for Integer Addition created by the 2013 - 2014 MUM 6, 6th graders!

Directions: Use the rules to complete the problems listed below.

1) Adding integers with the same sign.

WHY DO THESE METHODS WORK??

Positive + Positive: Find the sum of the numbers and make the solution positive.

Negative Negative: Find the sum of the absolute value of the numbers and make the solution negative.

Two positives: 4 + 4 = 8

Two negatives: -5 + (-6) = -11

2) Adding integers with different signs.

WHY DO THESE METHODS WORKS??

Negative + Positive or Positive + Negative

Find the difference of the absolute value of the numbers and use the sign of the number with the greater absolute value.

-10 + 4

|-10| = 10          and             |4| = 4

10 - 4 = 6

The number with the greater absolute value was -10

so....

the answer is -6.

6 + (-2)

|6| = 6          and             |-2| = 2

6 - 2 = 4

The number with the greater absolute value was 6
so....

the answer is (positive) 4.

Try these problems

1.    5 + (-4)

2.    6 + (-8)

3.    7 + 9

4.   -3 + 10

5.    0 + (-6)

6.   -1 + (-6)

7.   -7 + (-2)

8.    0 + (-10)

9.   -7 + 6

10. -10 + 10

Carpe Diem!
